Adm. Harold E. Shear
State Pier Complex
New London, CT

Blakeslee Arpaia Chapman is constructing a major new pier at New London for the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation. One of the biggest challanges of the project was the very limited staging area. The significant volume of material needed for the pier construction required organization of the space available. It was critical to keep the staging area neat and readily accessible, and, most importantly, the material undamaged. Among other challenges included the location itself. This very busy area is surrounded by ferry terminals, highways, rail lines, industrial development, and private watercraft.

The pier is over 1000 feet in length and 70 feet in width. The new cast-in-place concrete deck is supported by a network of 337 steel piles, each of which are 14 inches diameter and up to 140’ in length, driven through up to eight feet of rip rap. When completed, it will be a great addition to the State's maritime infrastructure.
