PROJECTS

Shiplift Replacement
Mystic Seaport Museum
Mystic, CT

BAC was awarded the contract to demolish the existing and construct the new shiplift for the Mystic Seaport Museum. The project was designed by Rolls Royce and inspected by Lloyd’s of London Engineers. The new lift is used to lift antique ships from the water for required repairs.

This marine construction project included the complete demolition and disposal of the existing marine structures, the installation of the new foundation piles, precast concrete pile caps, structural steel, exotic hardwood decking, steel sheet pile bulkhead with anchor system, timber fender systems, winching systems, articulated heavy lift structural steel lift platform, and all required utilities.

BAC received an award for "Pile Driving Project of the Year" from the Pile Driving Contractors Association.

Submarine Cable Installation
Norwalk, CT to Northport, NY

BAC was involved with multiple phases of the installation of the three new submarine electric transmission cables from Norwalk, CT to Northport, NY. We assisted McPhee Electric with the marine portions of the cable installation across Sheffield Island and assisted with the upland installations.

As a subcontractor to Durocher Marine, BAC's barge crews and diving crews successfully installed thousands of feet of concrete blankets off-shore, to help protect the cables in areas of shallow cover.

As a general contractor to Northeast Utilities, BAC's barge crews and diving crews installed hundreds of feet of stone-filled mattresses to help protect the cables near shore in Northport, NY.

BAC designed, installed, and maintains the cable area warning system in Northport, NY.

Adm. Harold E. Shear State Pier Complex
New London, CT

The scope of this marine construction project included the demolition and replacement of the west side of the State Pier, an 1100' by 70' commercial pier in New London Harbor. The work included riprap and rock walls, placing large broken stone on earth surfaces for protection against the action of water, erosion protection, harbor structures, roadway systems, underwater construction, underwater utilities, pile driving and extraction, repair and demolition of piers, bulkheads, reinforced concrete, precast concrete, fender systems, mechanical work, electrical work, brick paving, waterproofing, cathodic protection work, and sitework. The new cast-in-place concrete deck is supported by a network of 337 steel piles, each pile is 18 inches in diameter and 140 feet long. The piles were driven through 8 to 15 feet of riprap and had a 3-inch tolerance for alignment at the cut-off elevation.

The location of the project was challenging, as it was a very busy area surrounded by ferry terminals, highway, rail lines, industrial developments, and private watercraft. Our staging area was also very limited.

Steel Point Waterfront
The United Illuminating Company
Bridgeport, CT

BAC was the general contractor to The United Illuminating Company for this extensive waterfront stabilization project. The new bulkhead consisted of over 600 tons of steel sheet piling, hundreds of feet of the new 24" diameter battered pipe piles, and many tie-back soil anchors.

The existing concrete structure was demolished, and hundreds of foundation piles were removed in order to install the new bulkhead systems.

East Breakwater Repair
US Army Corps of Engineers
Stonington, CT

This US Army Corps of Engineers’ project is to repair the east offshore breakwater. The repairs consist of placing 3-ton to 5-ton stones in areas in need of reinforcement. Over 3,000 tons of stone were utilized. All hauling, loading, sea transporting, and placing of the stone was performed with all BAC personnel and equipment.
